Are blogging and social media worth the time investment, as a CEO?
This was a fun Quora question.
If you're a CEO or you run your own small business, here's something you might want to think about.
Yes.
Let’s think about your CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions).
You probably have a more specific number in mind, since you run ads to your site, product pages or service pages.
We’re going to assume an average of $6 CPM.
That means it’ll cost $6 to get 1,000 eyeballs.
When you turn off your ad campaigns = zero eyeballs.
Let’s think about blogging / socials.
In my tiny Quora space alone, I have around 1–2K views weekly:

As long as people are asking those questions, they’ll find my answers.
Unless I’m banned by the platform, my posts / answers live on to attract more people.
Here’s my impressions on LinkedIn:

Here’s what it looks like on my blog:

1,029 views in the last 3 months.
That’s not even that impressive, when you think about it.
If my math is right, all those impressions should have cost me a total of $ 1,236.33.
In reality, it only cost me $0.00.
The difference with a blog is that you often own your blog / website.
No platform controls the content on it.
So you’ll never get banned in that sense.
All in all, here’s 3 things I’ve observed:
- Blog and socials are great ways to put your brand out there.
- Organic feels better to people than being forced an ad.
- As long as you don’t get banned, your content will continue to gain impressions over time.
