Does it matter if a story is real or fake?

Jaz from Quora asks:

Does it matter if a story is real, fake, or based off a real one?

Good question. For me, it depends entirely on the context of the story.

When it’s a news story or an educational post, I’m all ears for the facts. I want as close to the real story as possible, and I want any biases to be acknowledged. In that context, the truth matters because the goal is to learn.

But when it comes to fiction, its different. I love Harry Potter, and even though I’ve never been forced to live under a staircase, I can still appreciate the way that story makes me feel. We all share some form of struggle.

Deep down, emotions are universal: we all know what frustration, hatred, and bliss feel like.

Even if a story is totally made up or embellished to be more engaging, there is still value there. I use those stories to explore and accept my own emotions. When I read Lord of the Rings, I’m happy to suspend my disbelief for the dragons and wizards because the underlying desires and achievements of the characters are still relevant to my life.

So, does it matter if it's real? If I'm trying to be informed, yes.

If I'm trying to be moved, not necessarily.
