How do bloggers come up with topics or niches?

I answered this Quora question today.

Thought I'd share the answer with you.

How do bloggers come up with topics or niches? How do they stay updated on current trends to appeal to their target audience?

I’ve worked over 100+ brands with me and my team ghostwritting over 4K blog posts in the last four years.

Based on that experience, here’s a few ideas:

  1. Coming up with topics - it’s pretty simple to do but a bit frustrating to execute. There are 3 main places most of the blogs I’ve worked with use: Quora, Reddit, Google’s People Also Asked.

These are good sources of questions their audiences are already asking online / typing into browsers. They just gather those questions but they often hit a wall when deciding what to prioritize.

Tools they use to make it less tedious: Ahrefs, Semrush. There's a bunch of others too.

  2. Current trends - they set up alerts via google news to get 1-2 emails per week if a post mentions a keyword or topic.

This way, they don't have to find the posts, it'll be delivered straight to the inbox.

  3. Subscribing to niche blogs - the biggest blog I've worked with had a DR of 77 (which is SEO speak for an above average performing site, though the rating isn't perfect).

Even they weren't leaders in their field. So they use an RSS feed aggregator, drop in industry leading sites in their niche.

This way, they can see all the posts from 3-5 different sites in one feed.

#2 is the easiest to set up and is a good idea in general for recent updates.
