Once you get traffic, how do you monetize?
This Q is from someone who's already gaining traction with their blog.
"Once a blog starts getting consistent organic traffic, how do you decide the best way to turn that audience into sustainable income?"
My framework for making this decision is based on three core questions:
What is your level of expertise? (Are you a practitioner or a curator?)
How "active" do you want the income to be? (Do you want to show up every day?)
Are you optimizing for time spent in the business or away from it?
Here are three common scenarios I see:
The Service Provider: If you have high-level expertise and don't mind working directly with clients, selling a custom service is the fastest way to monetize. In this model, your blog acts as a high-intent marketing tool. You’re essentially "buying a job," but one that offers high personalized value.
The Product Creator: If you have niche expertise that solves a specific problem but you value time freedom, selling a digital product (like a PDF or guide) is the move. You sacrifice the high price point of services for the ability to scale without direct client interface.
The Affiliate Strategist: If your niche is product-friendly (grilling, pet gear, or tech), affiliate marketing allows you to generate income by recommending the tools you already love.
There are many ways to monetize, but I’ve spent the most time helping blogs navigate scenarios #2 and #3.
It comes down to what sustainable means to you.
Depending on your lifestyle goals, even a high-quality ad partner like Mediavine might be the simplest path to your target income.
