Posting regularly but no traffic?

Teju from Quora asks:

I’ve been working on my blog for 8 months with no rankings or traffic. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal in blogging?

It is hard to say exactly why this is happening without seeing your specific posts, but I can give you some perspective from the other side.

8 months is a long time to work without seeing a return, so it’s understandable that you're frustrated. While it takes time for Google to trust a new site, having zero traffic after nearly a year usually means there’s a mismatch between what you’re writing and what people are looking for.

I’ve worked with over 150 businesses on their blogs, and when things weren't working, it almost always came down to one of two things:

  1. Writing about company news instead of answering questions. It’s very common for blogs to focus on internal updates like new hires, office moves, or logo changes. While those are important to a business, a stranger on the internet isn't searching for them.

To get traffic, posts need to solve a specific problem or answer a question someone is actually typing into a search engine.

  2. The post feels more like a sales pitch than a resource. If every article ends up being a reason to buy a product, readers can smell the sales pitch. I see a lot of comparison articles where the businesses' own product is a 10/10 and the competitors get slightly negative reviews.

People can usually tell when they’re being sold to versus being helped. If the content doesn't feel objective or genuinely useful, it’s hard to build the trust needed to get people to stay on the site.

There's potentially a technical issue with your site that prevents Google from finding it in the first place. But I haven't encountered that issue in practice. Still worth checking.

I’m not sure if either of those apply to your case but hope my personal experience with business gives some perspective.
