Unsure what readers want from your blog?

This Q from Quora asks:

How can you determine what people want from your website or blog content before creating it, if you are unsure of the direction you want to take?

If you aren't sure which direction to go, you can find it by looking for the overlap between two things:

  1. Things you’ve actually done. It’s much easier to write (and for people to listen) when you’re speaking from experience. Whether it’s a life event you navigated or a milestone you reached, having that "I've been there" perspective is what makes people trust what you have to say.

  2. Things people are actually asking about. Take a look at what’s being discussed in places like Reddit or Quora. If you see the same questions or frustrations popping up over and over, you know there's a real need for answers.

When you find a topic that fits both, then its time to start writing.

You can spend a lot of time worrying about your site's design or your writing style, but those are secondary.

People visit because they want a solution or a perspective from someone who's done something and sharing it. This is especially true if you’re covering topics like health, law, or personal finance.
