What an interesting discovery call
I had a discovery call with Leona. (Not her real name—she’s just one of my favorite League of Legends champions).
She was cold. Calculating.
There wasn't even a "How was your Thanksgiving?" She went straight into the numbers.
When I asked about her audience, she rattled off youtube analytics and blog stats.
Her goal was simple: increase conversions and improve her CQL (cost per qualified lead).
She uses data to decide every post she writes.
If a topic doesn't pass her metrics filter, she ignores it.
I asked her a hard question:
"Most third-party tools aren't connected directly to the backend of websites, which means they're either underreporting or overreporting. How much of that variance have you factored into your research methodology?"
Then, I stayed silent. I let her marinate in it.
Seventeen minutes after we hung up, I got an email.
She wanted to work with me.
I politely pushed back.
"I’m not sure you need to," I wrote. "You have access to the same data I do. You just need to place less emphasis on the numbers and prioritize what your audience actually needs."
She responded immediately: “Are you not interested in getting paid lol?”
That's the first casual thing she said to me.
The conversation is still ongoing.
We'll see if she actually needs my help, or just permission to follow her intuition rather than her numbers.
